‘GuhyaKalika’ (Goddess Secret Kali)
Written by Dipak Kumar Majumder
Birbhum is the place of ‘Tantra Sadhan’. Like many ‘Tantrik’ emerged during the ages, many people have also been born in the land of Birbhum. The presence of Mantra Tantra and Maa Kali (Goddess Kali) is found throughout the Birbhum. It is situated about 25 km from Rampurhat and 6 km from Nalhati, near the village of Bhadrapur, where the ancient historic goddess ‘GuhyaKalika’ (Goddess Secret Kali) and her temple is located and it’s about 300 years old.
The only famous octagonal temples was established by Maharaja Nandkumar Bhuvar, son of the famous Bhadrapura Raj Bari. There is no Shiva’s place near this famous ‘Kalimurthy’ (statue of Goddess Kali). There are snakes attached to the body of the goddess.
The Old Banyan Tree
According to legends, ‘SarapaVaranbhushta’ (Snake Coated) ‘Sarpasini’ ‘Dibhujaa’ (two handed), Nara-Munda-Mallini (skull-necklace-idol), is the idol worshiped by ‘Magadharaj Jarasandha’. Later on, it was established in the palace of King Cheth Singh of Kashi and became worshiped. The British governor Warren Hastings looted the idol with many possessions while looting the palace of King Cheth Singh. While travelling through Ganga, on the way to Kolkata, Dewan Maharaja Nandakumar rescued the statue. Then on the banks of the Brahmin river, he decided to worship this goddess next to a banyan tree (which is still present) in Akhilipur.
According to legends, Nandkumar’s ‘Kulpurohit’ objected to the establishment of this temple and said that worship of this idol is not possible by any householder. Only a ‘cupallic’ or ‘tantrik’ can get this right. The Maharaja started the construction of the temple by annihilating the objection, but it was not done due to the misfortune. The temple’s corners are damaged by the thunderstorm, and the peak remains incomplete. Then the Maharaja completed the incomplete temple in the ‘11th Maggh 1178’ Shakabda with great solemnity, and established the goddess there.
Bank of Bramhani River
Warren Hestings was removed by British government, and then Maharaja Nandkumar was appointed Dewan of Birbhum, Bardhaman, Nadia and Hughli and he was in the company of the British Government. According to that work, Hestings was fascinated with many things. Nandkumar came to know some of various cases of loot and financial corruption by him. According to the historians, Hestings has sent many letters with temptation of money to Maharaja. Maharaja complained to the government about this activity.
Hestings hadn’t took this very easily. Maharaj Nandkumar was accused in the plot of Hasting’s false case. Nandkumar was hanged by justice Sir Eliza Imphe, who was the childhood friend of Hestings. Everyone know about this brutal killing story.
Exceptional Temple of Goddess Guhya Kali
In his premature death, the work of the temple remained incomplete, and for a long time, the temple remains in a peakless state for 232 years. Nobody has come forward to complete this temple because of the many proverbs and reforms. The temple has remained in a dilapidated shape. Finally, the work of the unfinished peak and renovation of this temple was completed on 20th January 2004 with the help of Late Satyabrata Mukherjee’s daughter, Shrimati Madhumita Mukherjee, and with the help of Kirtan Nanda, former West Bengal minister and the successor of Maharaja Nandkumar, Shri Gaurishankar Rai.
